The history & importance of bandanas

Even in ancient times, the Egyptian pharaohs wore the royal Nemes headscarf to symbolise their power. Headscarves have always been considered a social and religious symbol.

Bandanas are small headscarves that have evolved over time as a variation of these. Hardly any other headwear is worn with so many different styles.

But what exactly is meant by the term bandana? The term comes from the Hindi and means "to bind".

Basically, the bandana is a square or triangular piece of fabric that can be tied into various shapes. We show a guide to the wearing variations and tying options below.

1980s and 1990s

After the rockabilly style in the 1950s, bandanas got another special boost in the 80s and 90s. This happened through mainly four trends in headscarf fashion:

How do I wear a bandana?

Probably the biggest advantage of bandanas is their versatility. A scarf can be worn for many different purposes at the same time: for example for hiking, tennis, cycling or other outdoor sports.

If you want to save yourself the trouble, you can also buy ready-tied bandanas. However, these can no longer be tied into one of the other variants mentioned above.

Corsaires can therefore be very beneficial for children especially, as they are easy to wear and stable in shape. A classic here are pre-tied bandanas as a headband (bandeau), durag or pirate headscarf.

When buying and wearing a bandana, don't forget to include your hairstyle. If you don’t want to completely cover your hair in the form of a turban or headscarf, you can follow the following rule: The longer the hair, the wider the bandana can be tied to the head.

For long and medium length hair, you have the option of tying the headband either under or over the hair. It is also particularly trendy to braid the scarf into the plait.

Which bandana suits me?

With the large selection and variety of bandanas, it is certainly not easy to make a decision. In our shop, we offer inexpensive models from Lipodo starting at a price of 4,95 €, while high-priced scarves from Levi’s can cost over 30 €.

Below we have compiled three important factors to help you decide.

Size

The standard bandana size for adults is approx. 55 cm x 55 cm. Since you can tie the scarf yourself so that it does not slip off your head, this size is usually quite sufficient for small and large heads.

Our pre-tied bandanas, on the other hand, come in a stretchy one size fits all so they fit a range of head sizes. The matching sizes are indicated individually for each product, so you only need to know your own head circumference. A guide to determining your head size is available here.

Colour

Basically, of course, everyone has to find their own style. Therefore, we would like to point out only a small fashion tip regarding colours and patterns.

Patterned bandanas with patterns, such as models in the camouflage look, should rather be combined with plain outfits - otherwise the appearance often looks too restless. However, if the outfit is already strikingly designed with different patterns, it is usually better rounded off by a plain and monochrome scarf.

Use

The majority of our bandanas are made of cotton or linen and are therefore well suited for sporting activities. The models are breathable, but still protect against sun and cooling wind. Thus bandanas can be worn in the summer and winter. The only question is: for what occasion?
