What is a Kalabreser? The Kalabreser is a felt hat for men, which features a very wide brim. The hat has a high crown, sometimes sharply pointed upwards or rounded off. Unlike many other hat models, the Kalabreser is exclusively made of felt. This ensures excellent fit, preventing the hat from slipping and maintaining its shape. Originally, the Kalabreser was typically found in plain and subdued colours, especially black. Another characteristic feature of the Kalabreser was the decoration with a hatband, to which a feather was attached.

In the mid-19th century, this particular hat style served as a symbol of revolution in several countries. The hat originated from the southern Italian region of Calabria, which also gave it its name. Here, the Kalabreser was worn by Italian revolutionaries who demanded independence from the Austrian Empire. These events occurred during the March Revolution in several European countries, and the Kalabreser gained popularity in 1848 due to the revolution.

In modern times, the Kalabreser is rarely seen. However, modified models, which, unlike the earlier versions, can also have colourful designs, are still available today. If one chooses to combine one of these models with one's outfit, one thing is certain: the hat is an absolute eye-catcher.
