Florentine hat

What is a Florentine hat? The Florentine hat is a stylish women's hat with a flat crown. Due to its wide, usually flexible brim, it can be classified as a type of slouch hat. Traditionally, the Florentine hat is made of straw, providing excellent protection against the sun and harmful UV rays.
A common embellishment found on the Florentine hat is hatband trimmings. These are often made of luxurious materials such as grosgrain, chiffon, or silk, available in different widths and usually arranged into decorative loops on the side.
Since Florentine hats are traditionally made of straw, they are usually in natural tones. However, the hatbands can come in various colours. Some are in more understated colours, like black, adding an elegant touch to the hat. Others feature trimmings in vibrant colours, providing a fresh and cheerful look. The hat exudes a particular dominance with its enormous brim width. This aura can be effectively utilised when pairing it with an outfit, with the headwear often adding the finishing touch to its wearer's look.
The history of the Florentine hat dates back to the 18th century, where it was often used by art painters as a prop for paintings. Later, from the mid-19th century to the early 20th century, the Florentine hat was primarily worn as a summer hat. It experienced a fashionable comeback in the 1930s and 1950s, becoming a trendy accessory. It is also a popular prop in the Austrian historical film "Sissi" from 1955. Even today, the elegant hat is primarily known as an occasion hat, often worn to festive events.
