What is a bucket hat?

The origin of the bucket hat

This beautiful hat style is said to date back to the start of the 20th century in Ireland. Made from wool or fur felt, they were worn by Irish fishermen and farmers as protection from the rain and moisture. The lanolin or wool wax that the wool naturally contained made the fishing hats water-repellent.

These days, however, the classic bucket hat is no longer made from wool. It is typically made from more lightweight textiles such as cotton, and is most popular in beige, olive green or camouflage. This can be traced back to the boonie hat, which was worn by US troops in military operations in warmer regions. The American headgear, also known as the bush hat or brim hat differs from the usual bucket hat by having a somewhat wider brim.

Thanks to its lightweight cotton fabric and practical properties, the bucket hat developed over time into an accessory for everyone. The hats are a particularly popular accessory for outdoor activities and travelling.

DIY – design your own bucket hat

Create a wow effect and design your own bucket hat in a retro batik effect. The famous tie dye pattern can easily be created by hand at home. All you need is a bucket hat, batik textile dye, elastic bands and a container. To achieve the best possible result, your bucket hat should be monochrome in the lightest possible shade and be made of batik-friendly materials such as cotton, linen or viscose.
Caution: Wear rubber gloves when dyeing and washing the hat.

Use elastic bands to tie your bucket hat into a fabric bundle.
Dissolve the dye in water in your container. Please refer to the batik textile dye instructions.
Now place your fabric bundle into your container with the dye mixture and leave it for around an hour. Once again, please refer to the batik textile dye instructions.
Take your bucket hat out of the dye mixture and rinse it with cold water. Now hang it up to dry. Et voilà: Your unique batik hat is ready to make its grand entrance.
