Classic hats of various kinds

Probably the best-known hat is the top hat. It is not only associated with magicians who pull a rabbit out of their top hat, but is also seen above all as a symbol of the bourgeoisie in the 19th century. Nowadays it is still worn on very festive occasions and is part of the compulsory uniform in equestrian sport.

From the Tyrolean mountains to Panama

The Panama hat was worn by personalities such as Winston Churchill and Erich Honecker. It is handmade from the so-called toquilla plant and pressed into its typical shape using heat and pressure.

Classic hats by region

Some classic hats are associated with a region or a profession. For example, the doctoral hats, which were actually part of the official dress of scholars or professors, are now often worn at graduation. The Tyrolean hat is clearly associated with the Tyrolean mountain landscape and provides wonderful protection from the sun or wind and weather in the mountains. Heidi's best friend Ziegenpeter wears the hat to herd the sheep in the mountains. Similar, but with a much wider brim, is the carpenter’s hat, which is worn by carpenters when practising their trade and especially during their journeyman years.

Well-known classics
