The cowboy hat isn’t just a popular choice during carnival or Fasching / Mardi Gras. Western films, series, cartoons and comics have made cowboys wearing cowboy hats the stuff of legend. The wild, bold man or the tough, adventurous cowgirl as we know them today have become a fashion trend, especially in the USA, which is reflected in clothing, music and hat fashion. Western hats have made their way into our hearts and are also favourites in our wardrobes!

The history of the cowboy hat

The history of the western hat dates back to the 19th century. The hat, which is also known as the ‘Ten Gallon Hat’, originated in Mexico where it was worn by cattle drivers on horseback. The cowboy hat came to North America following the occupation of the Mexican states. The term ‘cowboy’ comes from North America, especially Texas. In other regions such as Australia or Mexico, cowboys were called stockmen or charros.

The classic cowboy hat

We owe the typical cowboy hat in a cattleman design to the American hatter, John B. Stetson. In 1860 Stetson designed the ‘Boss of the Plains’, which we now know as the cowboy hat, thereby laying the foundation for his career as a headgear manufacturer. The western hats of the John B. Stetson Company, better known as Stetson are absolute classics to this day.

Characteristic features of the typical Cattleman are three parallel indentations in the crown, the wide, curved brim and a hat band made of grosgrain ribbon or leather. Other models from Stetson have also become well-established, e.g. the Cutter, Ridge Top, Dakota, Mountie, Gus or Diamond.

Cowboy hats today

To this day, cowboy hats are popular on cattle farms or so-called ranches in North America. But even though the farm owners like to call themselves ‘cowboys’, they no longer carry out the classic tasks performed by the original cowboys.

These days, the cowboy hat is not often worn by actual cowboys. It has become a fashion accessory that has found its way into everyday attire.

Western hats all year round

Robust, authentic and casual – even though they are predominantly worn as fashion accessories these days, you still can’t dispute the functional properties of the cowboy hat. Just as cowboy boots are made for walking, cowboy hats are made for wearing – for all kinds of outdoor activities. Cowboy hats protected the heads of cowboys through the wind and rain. Dirt, moisture, rain and even heat shouldn’t affect the hat. This makes it essential to manufacture headgear from easy-care but high quality materials.

What materials are used to make cowboy hats?

In the beginning, cowboy hat were made from the undercoat of beavers, as this material was particularly water-repellent and shiny. These days, however, beaver fur is very expensive, which is why fur felt cowboy hats are usually made from the cheaper undercoat of rabbits.

Autumn & winter

In the meantime, other materials such as leather or wool felt have been used to manufacture cowboy hats. Cowboy hats made from these kinds of textiles have excellent practical properties, e.g. a high level of heat storage and cold insulation, as well as resistance to external influences, making them ideal for outdoor activities in the autumn and winter.

Spring & summer

Western hats made from straw and cotton are ideal for the spring and summer, as they protect against UV radiation, are breathable and therefore ensure your head stays a comfortable temperature.

Cowboy hats for travellers

Looking after & cleaning cowboy hats

Prevention is essential. To protect your hat before anything happens to it and to extend its lifespan, you should waterproof it.

You can clean your hat following the individual care instructions. Cleaning the western hat depends on the textile from which it is made. Superficial dirt or grime on leather, felt and straw can be easily wiped off with a brush or a damp cloth. Felt hats can also be washed by hand if necessary. Cotton hats can usually be washed in the washing machine at 40 degrees.

Wearing cowboy hats correctly

As an accessory that provides protection, the cowboy hat must sit well on the head, because long journeys on horseback can take you over rocky ground. Gusts of wind mustn’t blow the hat off the head and it shouldn’t slip out of place. However it mustn’t give the cowboy a headache from being too tight either. This means that a cowboy hat needs to sit firmly and securely atop the head without pinching. But how do you achieve this ideal fit?

The right size

Choose the right size high quality hat. You can choose the correct size by knowing your head size. We explain how to quickly and easily figure out your head size in our size guide.

Tip: If your hat is a little too loose, you can shrink it by around 1 cm by using special sustainable cork inserts that are placed underneath the lining band. If your hat is too tight, you can expand it by around 1 cm by using a hat stretcher.

How to put your hat on correctly!

For the perfect fit and to achieve the typical western look, it’s important to position the cowboy hat on your head correctly. To do this, you need to know the front from the back of the hat. Some cowboy hats make it easy for you: This is because a small loop is sewn in to the crown to make it easy for you to differentiate between the back and front. This loop should sit at the back of the head when the hat is put on. If your hat doesn’t have this kind of loop, you can also find the front by looking at the shape of the hat. This is because the front of cowboy hats are generally more pointed than the back. A label or visible seam will also reveal the front and back of the hat. These are usually on the back, which is why, just like with the loop, they should be at the back of the head when the hat is worn.
