Oktoberfest – A festival with a long tradition

The first Oktoberfest was held in Munich in 1810. The occasion was the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese. Several festivals were organised in their honour. The last festival, which was a large horse race, can be seen as an early predecessor of today’s Oktoberfest. In 1818, the first carousel and lottery stalls were set up on the fairground. From then on, the festival was to be celebrated annually, but was cancelled several times due to cholera epidemics, the Prussian-Austrian War and the Franco-Prussian War. In the years that followed, however, the festival developed more and more into the event we know and love today. Since 1880, it has been permitted to sell beer, and in the years that followed, marquees with seating, bands and carousels were added. From 1914 to 1918, the Oktoberfest was cancelled due to the First World War. During the Nazi era, the Nazis laid claim to the festival and called it the "Großdeutsches Volksfest" after the annexation of Austria in 1938. The first proper Oktoberfest did not take place again until 1948. Since 1950, the festival has been organised with the now traditional barrel tapping. A tragic Oktoberfest took place in 1980 when a bomb exploded there, killing 13 people. The investigation is still ongoing. The Oktoberfest is now visited by more than 6 million party-loving guests every year. They no longer just come from Germany and the neighbouring countries, but also from Japan, the USA and Australia.

The right hat for a traditional outfit

A must-have for all Oktoberfest fans and those who want to become one is, of course, a traditional costume including a hat. Dirndls are particularly popular with the ladies. The selection of dirndls is enormous and the design of the dirndls is also very varied, so that there is a suitable model for every individual taste. Short lederhosen in combination with checked shirts are also becoming increasingly popular with women. Men, on the other hand, usually wear the classic longer lederhosen, which they combine with a checked shirt. In addition to the matching traditional shoes, one thing is of course essential to complete the look: a German Oktoberfest hat.
