Why is it called a snapback?

You know them not least from various hip-hop songs. Snapbacks are a cool fashion accessory and round off the casual outfits in casual street style for men and women. However, they are often mistakenly seen as synonymous with flat brim caps. The real meaning of snapback caps is much simpler and applies to an even wider range of caps than just flat brim caps.

Definition of snapback caps:
Caps with an adjustable push-button flap at the back, usually made of plastic.

The most popular types of snapbacks

Flat brim snapbacks

As mentioned at the beginning, flat brim caps are a real classic under the name "snapback". The peak is completely straight, while the crown height can vary – so-called low profile and high profile caps.

Curved brim snapbacks

Numerous caps with curved peaks are also available as adjustable snapbacks. Sporty baseball caps and dad hats with a vintage look are very popular. The latter often have a plain design and an unreinforced front.

Trucker snapbacks

Trucker caps are almost exclusively available as snapbacks. They are the perfect choice for summer. This is because the mesh on the back of the cap ensures a pleasant supply of fresh air. In addition, they are usually designed in several colours for a striking style. The Goorin Bros. and Capslab brands have particularly creative patches on the front – such as motifs of animals, Marvel characters or Pokémon.

5-panel snapbacks

Most caps and also snapbacks have a crown consisting of six symmetrically arranged parts (6 panels). But anyone who wants a special stylish touch can go for a 5-panel snapback. Here, the panels are no longer arranged symmetrically, but distributed across the cap. This allows for new stylish and colourful compositions.

Snapbacks from New Era

The brands Mitchell & Ness, 47 Brand and first and foremost New Era mainly share the licences for American sports caps of the MLB, NBA, NFL and NHL. So every year there are brand new snapbacks with the logos of teams like the LA Lakers, New York Yankees or Chicago Bulls.

New Era has also developed its own designations for its models. If you want to buy a snapback from New Era, look out for the following model names:

Snapback and sport

The standard material for snapback caps is breathable and easy-care cotton. This makes them very suitable for various sporting activities. A snapback is often worn as an accessory during training at Gym – an airy trucker snapback is particularly recommended here. As a glare and sun protection but the caps also cut a very good figure when golfing, surfing or hunting.

How do you wear a snapback cap?

There are many different ways of wearing it; ultimately, everyone can decide on their very own individual style . For a really comfortable fit on the head, however, we have a few tips.

Correct fit on the head

A snapback cap should be adjusted so that it is approximately 1 cm above the ears sits on the head. The best way to do this is to adjust it to the right head size beforehand and pull it over from the back of the head to the front. If necessary, the snapback can be worn at an angle, i.e. a little lower at the back of the head than at the front. Whether you wear the peak at the front or at the back is entirely up to your individual style.

Find the right size

Even though snapback caps are adjustable and fit a range of sizes (one size), it’s worth finding out your own head circumference with the aid of our instructions. If this is not within the stated size range of a snapback, it makes sense to look for another model in oversize or XS. As an absolute emergency solution for large heads, there are so-called snapback extenders, which can extend the snapback strap with another plastic part.

Sticker on the cap

Anyone who has ever bought a real snapback knows it: the shiny sticker on the peak. People often ask whether the sticker should be left on or removed for stylistic reasons. Long story short: there is no right or wrong. You just have to know if you are following a fashion trend and be aware of all the pros and cons.

Cleaning and storing snapback caps

Once you have decided on a snapback, the main thing is to be able to wear your new favourite for as long as possible and to keep its shape and colour. We achieve this through two things: proper cleaning and proper storage.

Cleaning

There are three ways to clean snapbacks: by hand washing, in the washing machine or dishwasher. Not all caps are suitable for all options. Basically, you should check in advance whether the snapback to be cleaned is colourfast – simply wipe it with a damp white cloth. If this already transfers colour, the cap is unfortunately not suitable for intensive cleaning.

Otherwise, the care label inside the snapback provides reliable information on how it may be washed. This is because some caps have a cardboard reinforcement in the canopy or particularly delicate seams. For washing in the washing machine, it is therefore essential to follow the washing instructions.

Cleaning a snapback in the dishwasher can make it look sparkling clean again, but be sure to use the appropriate dishwashing temperature and do not wash any dirty dishes.

In any case, the Hand wash the gentlest and safest method in the following steps:

Moisten the cap.
Put some cleaning detergent in a bowl. Rub the cap with detergent and a toothbrush.
Wash the cap under clean water until it is completely clean.
Dry with a towel and leave to air dry.

Storage

Special cap carriers are available for storing snapbacks and taking them with you on your travels (see picture below). If you want to store your caps stationary at home, you can order a cap rack in our online shop – also called cap holder or cap stand. Those who don’t use any of these gadgets should heed the following two tips:

Correct storage of snapback caps

Carefully press the back part of the cap forward so that it keeps its shape. Other snapbacks can thus be placed successively one after the other.
It is best to store the snapbacks in a cupboard or bag. This protects them from UV light and dust.
