What is a shepherd's hat? The shepherd's hat is a straw hat with a round brim that came into fashion around 1860. It resembles the sailor hat but features hanging velvet ribbons. This round, large hat persisted well into the 19th century and never truly disappeared, as it is still worn today by women as a sun hat.
