Argyle

What is argyle? Argyle is a diamond-shaped pattern arranged in a checkerboard-like manner. Typical patterns are lines in contrasting colours, forming crosses that further divide the diamonds into four smaller ones.

The textile pattern originated in the Scottish county of Argyll. In the early 20th century, the pattern was used for socks and sweaters made from knitted fabric, among other things.
