Chenille

Chenille

What is Chenille? Chenille is a fibre that, after processing into the fabric of the same name, exhibits soft and fluffy properties. The name comes from the French and translates to "caterpillar." The yarn got its name from its appearance, resembling a fluffy caterpillar with many protruding hairs. The base material from which the yarn is made is cotton, viscose, or acrylic.

Its historical origin dates back to 18th-century France. Later, around 1830, it became widespread in Britain, where a Paisley manufacturer developed a technique for producing particularly soft shawls. Chenille has become increasingly popular since the 1970s and is nowadays mainly used for furniture, but also for scarves and gloves, for example.

The yarn is made from two threads. One forms the so-called core, around which many short threads (pile threads) are wrapped. After twisting the inner thread and with the help of hot steam, a yarn with perpendicular protruding hairs is created, which can be trimmed as desired.

Despite its high quality and velvety appearance, textiles made from Chenille are easy to care for and can be machine washed.
