Kippah

What is a Kippah? The Kippah is a Jewish head covering for men. As a symbol of reverence for God, this small circular cap covers the back of the wearer's head and is occasionally secured to the hair with a metal clip for better grip. In modern Israel, similar to the Palestinian Kufiyah, the Kippah also provides information about the wearer's religious and political affiliation. Also referred to as a Yarmulke, this cap is worn during prayer or when visiting sacred Jewish sites. Although, unlike women in ancient Israel, men were not required to cover their heads except for a few ceremonial occasions, this custom gained prominence in the 16th century. Even guests and visitors are encouraged to wear this or another head covering when entering Jewish cemeteries and synagogues as a sign of respect. Orthodox Jews wear the Kippah daily to demonstrate their humility before God.

However, this Jewish head covering is not to be confused with the similar-looking skullcap worn by high-ranking Catholic clergy, known as a Pileolus, Zucchetto, or Soli Deo.
