Polyester

Sraya

What is polyester? Polyester is one of the most popular fabric types in the fashion and design world because the synthetic fabric offers high malleability, allowing it to adopt versatile properties of other natural fabrics, such as wool or silk. However, the fabric is often associated with prejudices because it is an artificial fibre made from plastic. Polyester is not harmful to health when used in clothing; the only concern is the release of microplastics while washing such textiles. These fine particles cannot easily be filtered out of the water and can harm the environment. Some wearers also find the fabric's limited breathability disadvantageous, which can lead to sweating during higher physical exertion.

Originally developed by a British chemist in 1941, polyester experienced its heyday in the 1970s when it became very popular as a comfortable and affordable fabric, thanks to its brightly shining suits. Another positive characteristic of polyester is its easy care; textiles can be easily cleaned in the washing machine. Furthermore, the fabric is durable and dries quickly, making it suitable for outdoor clothing. Clothing made from 100% polyester may become statically charged. The fibre is often mixed with natural materials such as cotton or wool to avoid this.
