Baseball caps
Discover nowRemoving stains from baseball caps
Especially after going to the gym, jogging or other strenuous activities, baseball caps will eventually develop stains. This is completely natural and can be quickly remedied using a few methods.
Is my cap suitable for washing?
The first question to answer before intensive cleaning is whether your beloved baseball cap is even
suitable for it. You can generally be on the safe side by checking the washing label on the inside of
the cap. However, if only hand washing is indicated there, it is worth doing a test to check the colour
fastness.
To do this, simply dampen a cloth or similar item, add a little detergent and rub it
over an inconspicuous area of the cap. If the colour of the cap rubs off on the cloth, you should
refrain from washing it, and if you do, only treat the unwanted stains very carefully and selectively.
Removing light stains
Required items: detergent, toothbrush, clean water, towel
How do I remove stains from my baseball cap? If you have small or larger stains on
your cap that are not too dirty, you can use this simple method:
Step 1:
Moisten the
cap in the areas to be cleaned, preferably with lukewarm water.
Step 2:
Pour water
and a little detergent into a bowl and dip a toothbrush into it.
Step 3:
Treat the
stains with the toothbrush using circular movements. If you have a sensitive cap material or want to be on the
safe side, you should use a soft toothbrush.
Step 4:
Rinse off the detergent with
clean water and use a towel to pat dry.
Step 5:
Allow the clean cap to air dry.
Caution: Placing it on a radiator or in direct sunlight may cause deformation.
Removing stubborn sweat stains
Sweat stains, cap – what next? On white caps, sweat appears as yellow stains, while on dark caps it appears as white stains with salt edges. In both cases, the following tips, which we will now explain as a method for intensive stain removal, will help. As a general rule, the sooner a stain is treated, the greater the chance of removing it easily and completely. These treatments can also be combined with a subsequent wash cycle for the baseball cap. This will remove most sweat marks from the cap.
Removing stains with household products
Want to clean your cap using products you almost always have
at home? No problem! Baking soda is a suitable choice here.
Step 1:
Mix the baking
soda with water to form a cleaning paste – it should have a consistency similar to toothpaste.
Step 2:
Apply the cleaning paste to the stains, for example with a soft toothbrush
or sponge, and leave it to soak in for several minutes.
Step 3:
Rinse the baseball
cap with clean water and then leave it to dry.
If necessary, this process can also be carried out using
standard hair shampoo. For white caps, bleach (hydrogen peroxide) can also be
used to remove stains and restore the cap to a bright white appearance. However, the bleach should not be left
on for too long, as it can have an aggressive effect on the material.
Removing stains with pre-treatment
If you don't want to use household products and prefer specially developed cleaning agents, you can also use these to pre-treat your cap before washing it as normal.
Check the result and repeat the washing process
In the case of older and stubborn stains, even special treatment may not be sufficient to clean the cap in one wash cycle. After drying, you should therefore always check whether the stain is still present. If the desired result has not been achieved, simply repeat the stain treatment.
Alternative cleaning agents for stains
If the above-mentioned stain removal methods are not possible or have not produced the desired result, we have a few more suggestions that may help.
Vinegar
Against sweat stains
In addition to the baking powder mentioned above, there is another classic
home remedy. Vinegar can be mixed with water in a ratio of 1 to 5 (1 spoonful of vinegar to 5
spoonfuls of water) and used as described above to remove sweat stains from the cap.
Pure alcohol
Against sweat stains
For delicate materials such as genuine wool caps, we
recommend using pure alcohol as an alternative. Simply rub it in with a clean cloth until the stains are no
longer visible. Alcohol evaporates on its own, so the cap does not need to be washed afterwards. Another nice
side effect of alcohol is that it can neutralise and remove unpleasant odours.
Gall soap
For sweat and grease stains
Gall soap has been known for years as an all-round laundry detergent.
For very stubborn stains, even oil stains on caps, pre-treating with gall soap before the
normal wash cycle can work wonders:
Step 1:
Apply gall soap to the stain and rub in.
Moisten the area beforehand if necessary.
Step 2:
Leave to work for approx. 30
minutes. For heavy soiling, leave for a little longer.
Step 3:
Rinse off the gall
soap and start washing the cap – either by hand, in the washing machine or in the dishwasher.
Impregnation – preventing dirt and stains on your cap
The best thing is not having to worry about stains in the first place. To prevent your baseball cap from getting dirty on your next walk or other outdoor activity, it can be impregnated for protection. Our range of cap accessories includes a suitable waterproofing spray which, when applied correctly, repels dirt and water.
