How do I find the right hat size for me?

Hatshopping makes it very easy to find the right hat size for you. Measuring head circumference is the first step to finding the right hat size for both adults and children. Ideally, you should use a tape measure, but you can also use a simple piece of string:

  1. First, stand in front of a mirror to make sure you measure around the head correctly.
  2. It is essential to run the measuring tape around the middle of the back of the head and about one centimetre above the ears, around to the forehead.
  3. Bring the tape measure or string together at the centre of your forehead. But be sure not to pull the tape too tight.
  4. You can now read off your head circumference in your reflection in the mirror. If you don’t have a mirror to hand, simply read off the number where the measuring tape meets.

If using a piece of string or twine, you will need to mark the point where they meet. You can then hold the string up against a ruler to read off your head size.

Our tip: If you want to pull your hat down further over your head, you will need to add around one centimetre to your measured head size. You should also round up to the next full number. So, for example, if you measure a circumference of 59.5 cm, you will need to round up to 60 cm.

You can then use our size chart to figure out your size. There is a separate size chart for children aged up to eight years old. Both size charts show conversions from American and English sizes into international sizes.

If your new hat is still a little bit too big, you can use the cork inserts provided to make the hat circumference a bit smaller. To do this, place these inserts underneath the inner band on the sides of the hat.

On the topic of measuring cap sizes we have created a separate page with instructions and size charts for the different types of caps.
