UV protection

Above all, safari hats should be practical. If you opt for a high-quality hat, you will be well protected from environmental influences.

The sun in particular can be a real danger on safari. Many people underestimate the strength of UV radiation in countries close to the equator such as Namibia, Tanzania or Kenya. Long periods in the sun and open vehicles without a hood increase the risk of sunburn.

If you want to explore Africa in a safari hat, you should therefore attach particular importance to good UV protection. A wide brim provides sufficient shade for the face and neck. For an extra dose of safety, we recommend a safari hat with neck protection.

Safari hats are available in different materials, each of which has its own advantages. The following overview will help you find the right hat quickly.

Safari hat made of cotton

Cotton is breathable and still provides reliable protection from the sun. Due to the lightweight fabric, please take care that the hat does not fly away! Especially on windy days or when travelling fast in an open vehicle, caution is advised. A practical chin strap on the cloth hat can help here. Most cotton hats can also be folded and transported in your luggage to save space.

Leather safari hat

Leather hats are very robust and can withstand the dusty air. Thanks to practical side air eyelets on the crown of the hat, sufficient air can reach the head. However, the hats should be regularly waterproofed to protect them from UV radiation. Another advantage: the hats sit comfortably and securely on the head at the same time.

Straw safari hat

Straw hats can also be worn on safari. Many tightly woven hats have high to very high UV protection. Straw hats also have the advantage that air can circulate through the fine gaps in the weave pattern.

Hats made from paper straw, an artificial straw made from cellulose, are more elastic and less sensitive than models made from natural straw and are therefore always up for an adventure.

Hat and scarf on safari?

Wearing a hat and scarf on safari? This may sound strange at first, but it can actually make sense. Because safari fans know: The early bird catches the worm. If you want to spot rare animals, you have the best chance of doing so early in the morning.

Due to the high temperatures, most animals become less active during the course of the day and seek shelter from the heat, meaning that the national parks are particularly busy in the morning hours. As temperatures sometimes drop below 10 °C at night, it is still cold early in the morning. A hat can be a good idea.

A light scarf or bandana also protects you from the morning chill and can also keep UV rays and insects away from the neck and throat area.
