The beginnings of Mitchell & Ness

Back in 1904, former tennis and wrestling champion Frank P. Mitchell and his friend and golfer Charles M. Ness founded a sports shop together in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. As early as 1917, an Italian youth named Sisto Capolino would come to the shop looking for work. At the age of 13, he began working at Mitchell & Ness, taking on jobs ranging from merchandise handling to cleaning.

While the label had previously been known for tennis rackets and golf equipment, from 1925 it supplied uniforms to local high school and college sports teams and was able to land a major coup as early as 1933: The newly founded Philadelphia Eagles commissioned Mitchell & Ness to outfit their team.

Casual and cool styles for everyone

Over the next few years, the Mitchell & Ness brand was to equip other teams such as the Philadelphia Athletics and the Philadelphia Phillies with sporting goods and further popularise its name. The year 1983 was to be a major turning point in the company's history: Sisto’s son Peter received a customer who wanted his old, game-worn jerseys repaired. During this process, he discovered thousands of discarded flannels and came up with the idea of remaking old jerseys from major sports teams and selling them with a retro look. It was to be a complete success and at the end of the 1980s he was granted a licence to manufacture jerseys for Major League Baseball. At the turn of the millennium, licences for the NBA, NFL and NHL were added and the Mitchell & Ness brand name was to become even more well-known. The biggest milestone to date: the licence to reproduce the famous Michael Jordan jersey.

The many baseball caps with the designs of the respective sports clubs are still absolutely hip accessories today and the name Mitchell & Ness is said in the same breath as the big brands New Era and 47 Brand.
