Basel Hat

What is a Basel hat? The Basel hat was an exceptionally tall black felt cone, resembling a slightly truncated sugarloaf. These head coverings often attracted ridicule from passing people and were referred to as "Babylonian towers" and "butter pots." Sightseers from all over Europe travelled to Basel to make fun of the tall hats worn by the Basel residents.
Today, a kind of flat yodeler's hat is considered a Basel hat in Basel.
