Chic sources of heat: Mittens

Mittens keep you wonderfully warm because they are closed at the front of the fingers and only have one other separate section for the thumb. Mittens have become a fashionable trend accessory not only because of their phenomenal warmth and insulation against the cold, but also because of their unique design. The large glove surface offers generous space for beautiful patterns, plays of colour and embellishments.

The mitten models are particularly practical designs as they have fold-out fingertips so that you can turn them into finger gloves in no time at all. Convertible models such as these are available, for example, from the brand Roeckl.

Finger gloves or mittens?

If you're out on the ski slopes or just like to avoid cold fingers while walking, it’s worth asking: Are mittens or gloves better? Basically, mittens offer better protection against the cold, as the fingers are close together and thus make greater use of the body’s own heat. Finger gloves, on the other hand, allow a better grip, which can be especially important when skiing, cycling or operating smartphones. Accordingly, it is entirely up to the individual requirements that you place on a new pair of gloves.

The different types of mittens

There are different designs for mittens and also functional differences. For example, a mitten made of knit is nowhere near as windproof as those made of suede or as water-repellent as models with GORE-TEX® technology. Gloves made from merino wool, which is particularly effective as a warming inner lining for mittens, are true warmth classics. As a stylish alternative to animal materials, we can recommend mittens made of faux fur from the brand UGG.

The right glove size

Size is the most important point when choosing a new mitten. Because the functional component also plays a role here: If the mittens were bought too big, there is too much air in the glove so that it heats up less. If the glove has been chosen too small, this in turn reduces the blood flow to the fingers. An exact measurement is therefore worth its weight in gold. Selection by activity

Lined and thick gloves are a must-have for skiing or snowboarding – and even better for protection against the cold if they are mittens. But there are other activities where you regularly risk cold hands. When motorcycling or hunting , mittens may well be a good choice. If it doesn’t affect the grip too much, they offer the best protection against the cold.
