What is a snood?

The snood is a stylish round scarf – also known as a loop scarf, slip-on scarf, ring scarf or neck warmer. Unlike conventional scarves, the loop has no ends. It is either made in one piece or sewn together in a circle.

This also means: no annoying and flapping ends, no slipping, no knots – just pull it over your head and you’re done! The loop scarf sits comfortably on the neck and stays there.

Knitted loop scarves

Knitted snoods are among the most popular round scarves. The typical knitted fabric consists of intertwined yarn loops, which makes the scarf beautifully flexible and soft.

The loop can look very different depending on the type of knitting: Chunky knits impress with a loose texture that looks casual and lets plenty of air through, while fine knits have a sophisticated and understated look. Knitted ring scarves are breathable and can therefore regulate moisture well – ideal for changeable weather.

The knitted loops are available in normal new wool, high-quality merino wool or a variety of material blends, which can contain alpaca wool or cashmere in addition to synthetic fibres.

Woven snoods

Woven snoods are the all-rounders among round scarves – robust, stylish and wearable all year round.

Unlike knitted loops, they are made from smooth, braided threads that intersect in a fixed pattern. This ensures a denser ribbed structure and a special finish to the fabric. Woven loops are often easier to care for and more robust than their knitted counterparts.

In addition to wool or recycled synthetic fibres, stretchy fibres such as elastane are often woven into the fabric – this means that these slip-on scarves fit comfortably and retain their shape. It can also be worn in other ways, for example as additional face protection over the mouth and nose or as a balaclava. It is not without reason that these snoods are also known as multifunctional scarves.

Thanks to the thinner and lighter fabric, woven styles can also be worn in spring and summer.

Snoods for the whole year

Winter snoods

Whether you’re strolling through town, on the way to work or on the ski slopes – snoods are indispensable companions in winter. Designs made of thick knitted wool, warming fleece or jersey offer optimum protection from the cold and wind. Particularly popular are versions with a high wool content or made from high-quality merino wool, which provide natural heat retention thanks to their insulating properties. Special thermal designs protect wearers from particularly cold temperatures.

A fluffy fleece lining on the inside of lined loops makes them even more comfortable to wear. If you prefer a sporty look, opt for a functional neck warmer with a water- and wind-repellent surface. For women, we have modern snoods made of extra-soft faux fur or with a glittery look.

All round scarves for winter have one thing in common: they keep you cosy and warm, even at low temperatures.

Summer snoods

Snoods can also be really useful as a summer scarf, especially if you like to be out and about in nature. If you want to protect yourself from environmental influences when hiking, you can opt for thin styles made of synthetic fibres. A light loop scarf is particularly suitable here. A round scarf made from recycled polyester has a moisture-regulating effect and wicks away perspiration while protecting the neck from cooling down.

Thanks to integrated UV protection, many of the scarves reliably shield the throat and neck from harmful sunlight. Some BUFF brand designs also feature Insect Shield®, which keeps out biting and stinging insects.

Tying a snood and practical features

Tie a snood

How do you wear a snood or loop scarf? It's simple: pull it over your head and you’re done! No time-consuming tying, knotting and readjusting necessary.

But if you fancy an individual style, you can choose one of the many ways to wear it.

In the classic figure of eight, the round scarf is doubled and pulled over the neck. It fits snugly and provides an extra portion of warmth on cold days. If you like, you can also twist a long loop scarf two or three times.

Chunky knit styles can be pulled over the head and worn loosely on the shoulders, similar to a stole or bolero. This look is particularly popular with women.

Alternatively, the snood is placed over the neck from behind to create two loops at the front. Now simply thread one loop through the other and tighten the scarf at the neck. This is a popular style for men’s loop scarves.

Sporty neck warmers or tubes are usually elasticated and can be pulled over the mouth and nose, for example. Alternatively, thanks to them, the scarf can be worn as a balaclava. It could hardly be more versatile!

Features

Many snoods are equipped with practical features. In addition to waterproof and wind-repellent properties or UV protection, some designs have even more to offer.

Some slip-on scarves are reflective thanks to special woven-in threads or a special coating. This ensures better visibility in the dark and an additional feeling of safety in road traffic.

Other neck warmers can be adjusted in size and individually adapted to any neck thanks to the integrated rubber drawstring. The snood can be worn close-fitting or wide. Stretchy loop scarves also adapt to the size of the neck and therefore cover all sizes including XXL.
