Jacobin Cap

Erik

What is a Jacobin cap? The Jacobin cap is a headgear worn by French revolutionaries, primarily by Jacobins, in 1789. Jacobins were members of the most radical and significant political club during the French Revolution, aiming to replace the constitutional monarchy with a republic.

The headgear, resembling a Smurf hat in its shape and usually dyed red, is also known as a Phrygian cap. It is often found in coats of arms, symbolising its revolutionary significance as a symbol of freedom and independence. Additionally, this revolutionary hat is adorned with a cockade in the colours of the French national flag.
