Khevenhüller

What is a Khevenhüller? The Khevenhüller is a special form of the well-known tricorne hat, named after an Austrian field marshal. The hat is generally characterised by its triangular shape, created by folding the round brim upwards on three sides. Traditionally, the Khevenhüller is mostly black. However, as it is no longer worn as an accessory but rather as a costume today, its colour scheme can be more colourful.

The Khevenhüller or tricorne hat, in general, is believed to have originated in the 17th century. It evolved from the initially round hat shape worn by the Spanish army during the War of the Spanish Succession. The advantage of this design was that rain could run off at the respective corners, ensuring greater comfort. In other countries, the hat later became part of military attire and was also increasingly worn by civilians not belonging to the military. Today, the Khevenhüller is as rare to find on the streets of cities as the tricorne hat.
