Gugel

What is a Gugel? The Gugel, also known as "Gogel," "Kogel," or "Kugel," is a hood-like head covering from the Middle Ages. It covered the head and shoulders and sometimes had a collar. The long point of the hood hung down the wearer's back. Initially, this practical headgear was mainly worn by farmers, hunters, shepherds, or others who worked outdoors as protection against the weather.

From the 14th century, wearing the Gugel became increasingly popular among the nobility. However, they adorned it with pearls, gemstones, and beautiful embroidery. However, the hood did not persist among the nobles for long; by the end of the 14th century, it was only worn by the common people. Today, a variant of the Gugel still exists in the form of the Swabian jester's cap.
