Paisley

Bandana

What is paisley? Paisley is one of the oldest and most beloved patterns in the world. Its typical design is inspired by nature and takes the form of a leaf with a pointed end. The popular pattern originated in Persia and was introduced to India through trade, where cloths and scarves were first embroidered with Paisley. Later, the British also developed a fondness for textiles featuring this oriental pattern, especially scarves in this design, which became a fashion trend. However, the embroidered cloths from India were expensive, so the trend was mainly represented in the noble society. In the 19th century, cloths with the same pattern made from Scottish cotton entered the market, which were produced in the Scottish town of Paisley and were considerably cheaper. The extravagant pattern was named after this place of production. Even today, the pattern remains very popular in many different colours for fashionable accessories, such as bandanas, headwear, or scarves. Traditionally, the Paisley pattern is executed in various shades of red, although traditional embroidery in production has been replaced by printing and weaving.
