Sisal

Pablito

What is sisal? Sisal is a natural fiber obtained from the leaves of the sisal agave plant. Since the 19th century, fibre has been extracted from the plant; previously, agave leaves were used to produce pulque, an alcoholic beverage used in religious rituals. It wasn't until fibre was brought to Europe by the Spanish and Portuguese that sisal became significant for the textile industry.

The sisal fiber is primarily used for its durability in the production of headwear and carpets. While the fibre's natural colour is white, it can be dyed effectively, resulting in products available in a wide range of colours. The sisal genus is finer and more lustrous than other types of hemp, such as Sinamay straw from the Philippines. Both materials are commonly used in occasion hats and hair accessories because they appear particularly fine, stable in shape, and elegant compared to most straw types.
