Suede

Burney

What is Suede? Suede is a collective term for all types of leather with a velvety, soft surface. Its rough texture resembles the appearance of suede, which is why suede is often mistakenly referred to as suede leather. However, while suede leather is obtained from wild animals and already has a naturally rough surface, suede is tanned and sanded to create its typical rough structure. It can be produced from almost any animal hide, with lamb, goat, calf, and pig hides being the most common. Although processed leather is very robust and durable, it is also somewhat more susceptible to dirt and moisture compared to smooth leather. Additionally, cleaning suede is more challenging. It is advisable to wash suede by hand, using cold water and a mild detergent. Machine washing is not suitable for suede. Outdoor clothing made from this material, such as hats or shoes, should be treated with a waterproofing agent to protect them from moisture.
