What is a flat brim cap?

Flat brim caps were the epitome of cool street style in the early 2000s. Even at its inception, the flat brim cap was an absolute box office hit as a counterpart to the classic baseball cap with a curved peak. It made its breakthrough in 1954 in particular with the 59Fifty by New Era. This type of cap is also called a flat bill or flat visor cap, because what distinguishes all these models is their flat brim, which gives them their very own look. The fact that established brands from the hat sector such as Stetson also offer flat brim caps shows the great popularity of this model type.

Curved brim vs. flat brim cap

Ever since the two types of models have existed, this question has been hotly debated: What’s cooler, a curved brim cap or a flat brim cap? Anyone who studies fashion a little will quickly notice that there is always an interplay of trend phenomena. The flat brim was the most popular cap shape around the year 2010, while curved brim caps, especially dad hats, are now enjoying a real renaissance. Flat brim baseball cap

A flat-bill baseball cap has six panels on the top and usually a reinforced front. The cap does not necessarily have to have a Major League Baseball (MLB) logo on it – it is just a designation for this classically designed model.

Flat brim snapback

A snapback is an adjustable cap with a press stud tab. A flat brim can therefore be easily adjusted for a comfortable fit on the head and has an open back.

Flat brim trucker cap

Trucker caps provide very pleasant air circulation for the head, as they have a mesh at the back. They are usually two-coloured and attractively designed. This makes them particularly suitable for sports or very hot days in summer.

Flat brim dad hat

The retro trend of dad caps doesn’t stop at flat brim caps either. The fashionable charm is the unreinforced front, which makes this type of flat brim cap look and feel softer.

5 panel flat brim

Instead of the classic six evenly distributed parts, there are also differently arranged 5 panel caps. Since the different parts are no longer evenly distributed, exciting combinations of colour areas are possible with this type of flat brim cap. Different materials are often combined with each other as patchwork, so that corduroy meets cotton, for example.

New Era flat brim caps

A big player in the flat brim cap category is the brand New Era. Namely, the bestsellers 9Fifty cap (snapback) and 59Fifty (fitted cap), both of which are among the most popular caps with straight visors. An insider tip is 19Twenty. It is a fitted flat brim cap with an unstructured front and straight peak.

In addition, New Era holds all licences for American sports teams and designs flat brims with logos of the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers and Detroit Tigers.

Caps with straight peaks are suitable for women, men and children. The important thing is that your own flat-brim cap is adapted to your individual needs. Depending on the activity, for example, a different cap shape is preferable. An airy trucker cap is advisable for sweaty activities, while a 59Fifty cap closed at the back insulates the heat on the head better.

The correct size

A cap size that fits your own head is essential for a comfortable and tight fit on the head. You can easily determine your own head size with the detailed instructions in the help centre of our online shop. If it is a fitted flat brim, the selected size must correspond exactly to your own head circumference, as it is no longer adjustable afterwards. Flat brim snapbacks, on the other hand, have a range of sizes (one size). If a larger adjustment is necessary for snapbacks, there is even the option of adding another piece as an extension (cap extender).

How to wear a flat brim cap?

A flat brim cap should be adjusted or purchased to fit approximately 1 cm above the ears. To do this, simply place the cap at the back of the head and pull it forward. Classically, the cap is worn slightly higher at the front than at the back. If you wear the peak at the back, then it is exactly the reverse.
