The history of the felt hat

Functional, fashionable, rich in tradition: Felt was one of the first materials used to manufacture hats. Felt hats were made from pressed animal fur from around 2000 B.C. But why is this material so popular?

Depending on the base material used (e.g. wool, rabbit fur or beaver fur), felt hats have different distinct characteristics. However, all felt hats share the following advantages:

The first real felt hats

While straw hats and hoods were worn in the Middle Ages, the first hatters appeared in the 12th and 13th centuries. They mainly produced functional hunting hats. Fashionable felt hats with a classic brim did not come about until the 16th century. These included traditional Tyrolean felt hats (high, pointed hats with a wide brim).

In the 19th century

The trilby with a narrower brim than the fedora appeared

The most popular felt hats

After a lull in the 1960s, hats, particularly classic felt hats, are enjoying great popularity again and can be seen in all possible shapes and colours in the fashion world. In the following paragraphs, we will present the trendiest felt hats on offer today. Thanks to their outstanding properties, they can be worn all year round.

Depending on the material used, these hats are made either of wool felt or fur felt. The highest quality felt hats are made from beaver fur because it is naturally water-repellent. Our most expensive felt hat, for example, is a men’s hat made from beaver fur from the Borsalino brand, which sells for an impressive €571,95. Wool felt hats, on the other hand, are cheaper and are available in our shop from €32.95.

Western hats

We will start with the most iconic felt hat style popular in all western films: the cowboy hat. The most famous models from Stetson are traditionally handmade and crafted from high-quality fur felt.

Fedoras

It’s not just Al Capone’s henchmen who made this style popular. The fedora (or Bogart hat) adorns the head of many casual and elegant figures in numerous gangster films. It is also available as a small-brimmed variant in the form of the trilby.

The brim kinks downward at the front
The crown is slightly pinched at the front on both sides

Pork pie hats

Also known as a jazz hat or musician hat, this style was originally created as a variation on the fedora. Today it’s very much bang on trend and looks particularly modern.

Traditional hats

Bavarian felt hats from the Allgäu or classic Tyrolean hunting hats are probably the most well-known of all traditional hats. They are among the oldest felt hat styles and look very similar to one another. You can see many versions of them in Germany at the Oktoberfest.

Traveller hats

A rainproof traveller hat is the ideal choice for fans of the outdoors who enjoy hiking or hunting. When creating this type of hiking hat, special care is taken to ensure they are water-repellent and protect the wearer against the sun. Sauna hats – a hot tip

Why do some people even wear a hat when they’re going into the sauna? Isn’t it hot enough in there? That’s the wrong way to look at it!

The cold and heat-insulating felt material works wonders in saunas. Both heat and cold are primarily absorbed and released through the scalp. This means that these hats protect the head from overheating in the sauna and from becoming too cool in the cold bath afterwards. They also look very stylish.

How should a felt hat fit?

When worn in the classic style, the brim touches the ears very lightly and the hat sits firmly and comfortably atop the head after applying just a little pressure when putting it on. Those looking for a more modern fit can wear the felt hat slightly higher up and away from the face.

The key to achieving the right fit is buying the right hat size. The correct size is easy to figure out using our instructions.

Do felt hats become tighter or looser over time?

External influences or sweat will cause felt hats to shrink a little over time. If your head circumference is between two sizes, you should always pick the larger size.

We provide free cork strips with every purchase, which can be inserted into the hat to adjust the fit. These strips allow you to reduce the size of your felt hat by up to a centimetre.

Can I take the hat band off?

The trim band is usually sewn on to most felt hats and is a stylish feature. This means that the manufacturer doesn’t recommend removing the band from the crown.

How do you clean a felt hat?

It’s easy-peasy, as the saying goes. A hat brush is a felt hat’s best friend! Regular brushing will keep it looking new for a very long time. It is the first port of call when the hat is slightly dirty. There are brief instructions for cleaning with a brush below.

In principle, dry cleaning should always be prioritised over wet cleaning. If a felt hat is damp, it becomes easy to just rub the dirt in.

Superficial dirt that cannot be removed with the brush can be carefully rubbed with fine-grained sandpaper. For deep stains, however, you can clean the hat with a damp cloth and some detergent.

If your fur felt or felt hat has longer fibres, it is essential to brush with the hair structure and not against it

Waterproofing

The water-repellent properties of a felt hat can become less effective after it has been cleaned numerous times. However, a waterproofing spray can be used to refresh the level of protection provided in no time.

Shaping felt hats

Last but not least, you may find your felt hat has become misshapen, e.g. due to storing it incorrectly. If you moisten a high-quality felt hat using a little steam, you can shape it back into its original form relatively easily. In the past it was common for cowboys to shape their hats to personalise them. All you have to do is make sure it is left to dry properly before you wear it again.
