Viscose

Viskose

What is viscose? Viscose is a synthetic fiber spun from cellulose. While cellulose is a 100% biodegradable fibre, it needs to be further processed through human intervention in chemical processes to create viscose or other synthetic fibres. The cellulose obtained from wood is melted into a viscous spinning solution and further processed into a continuous thread. This process also gives rise to the term "viscosity," which describes the degree of viscosity of a substance. Unlike cotton, during this chemical manufacturing process, the appearance, colour, fibre thickness, and length can be varied. Modal and Tencel/Lyocell are trade names for cellulose-based synthetic fibres with slightly higher durability. Additionally, cellophane (used in cling film) is another product manufactured using the viscose process.

Viscose is an easy-to-care-for fabric and can be machine washed at reduced spin speeds and temperatures of up to 40°C. It is advisable to use a liquid detergent, as powder residue can accumulate in the fibres, dulling the appearance of textiles over time.
